Here is a list of animal fiction. The main characters are animals or related to animals in some way. Notice, this list contains children's and young adult books.
By Author:
Atwater-Rhodes, Amelia - These books are about the shapeshifters, beings who are human in appearance but can change into their corresponding animals at will. The series begins as Zane and Danica resolve to bring peace to their people so they can end the ancient war that has left countless dead and many more grieving. Each book is told from a different character's point of view. So far, it depicts two generations. Highly recommended.
Volumes of the Kiesha'ra:
- Hawksong *****
- Snakecharm ****
- Falcondance *****
- Wolfcry ****
Carman, Patrick - Pretty good books with a kinda predictable (at least for me) plot. They are about Alexa and the quest to save her city (and eventually the Land of Elyon) with the help of Jocastas, the stones that allow the bearer to speak with animals. Hmm... Jocasta... relation to Greek mythology? Maybe.
The Land of Elyon:
- The Dark Hills Divide ****
- Beyond the Valley of Thorns ***
- The Tenth City ***
Coville, Bruce - Great book & sequel. They are about Cara, who is dropped in the world of Luster with a mission to fight Beloved, the enemy of unicorns. I can't say more without giving anything away. The author still hasn't written the next book. Highly recommended.
The Unicorn Chronicles:
- Into the Land of the Unicorns ****
- Song of the Wanderer *****
Funke, Cornelia - Mostly adventure and fantasy. The "Ink" books are about Meggie and her father who can "read" characters from books to life. Things get complicated from there. I'll bet you anything the next book will be called Inkdeath.
- Dragon rider ****
Hightman, Jason - Simon learns that he is a decendant of knights who have orders to slay dragons, the evilest creatures. He and his father set out to kill the last dragon and along the way, they meet Alaythia, who has been painting dragon signs but doesn't know why... Just when they think they've killed the last dragon, it turns out there were more they never knew about and these dragons have a diabolical plan. Recommended.
- The Saint of Dragons ****
Hoeye, Michael - This is very creative. I can't really describe it but read them. It takes place in a world of civilized rodents. Hermux is a mouse who solves mysteries on the side... great fun, if you ask me.
Hermux Tantamoq adventures:
- Time Stops For No Mouse ***
- The Sands of Time ****
- No Time Like Show Time ***
Jacques, Brian - I've only read a few of the
Redwall books but I liked this one.
Mossflower takes place before
Redwall. It is about how Martin and the woodland inhabitants rebelled against Tsarmina, the evil Queen of Mossflower, and founded Redwall.

Mossflower ****
Klause, Annette Curtis - I thought this was an interesting look at werewolves. When Vivian, a young werewolf, falls in love with a human, her pack is confused. Why whould she want a human when she could have her pick of their own kind? Things get complicated when mysterious attacks on humans have been made within the town and members of the pack battle for the position of leader. When Vivian makes a mistake, the whole pack may be revealed. It's been made into a movie but it's different than the book.
- Blood and Chocolate ****
Lasky, Kathryn - The Guardians of Ga'Hoole series is about a civilization of owls that exists after humans have been extinct for many years. They are advanced and smart... but not smart enough to avoid mistakes humans have made. Power struggles rise between the factions and four young owls, Soren, Twilight, Gylfie, and Digger, must do what they can to help protect the owls of Ga'Hoole.
Guardians of Ga'Hoole:
- The Capture ***
- The Journey ***
- The Rescue ***
- The Siege ***
- The Shattering ***
- The Burning ***
- The Hatchling ***
- The Outcast ***
- The Legends: The First Collier ***
- The Legends: The Coming of Hoole ****
- The Legends: To be a King ***
Oppel, Kenneth - I read these a while ago but I liked them. Shade is a young bat who gets separated from his colony during migration. He and Marina must find the colony before Goth, a blood-thirsty vampire bat, finds them first. The saga continues in
Sunwing when humans capture the bats and hold them captive. Once they escape, their problems seem worse than ever... In
Firewing, the next generation of bats faces the Underworld, the place where dead bats go. When Griffin goes in search of Luna, Shade must find them both before they also lose their lives. Recommended.
Silverwing saga:

Paolini, Christopher - Made into a movie. Adventures galore! In the land of Alagaesia, Eragon finds a mysterious dragon egg and to his surprise, he now has his own dragon: Saphira. Unknown to him, there are others searching for this dragon... others that are willing to kill. Eragon, Saphira, and Brom look for safety while Eragon struggles with his identity. The adventure continues in
Eldest when the group goes to the Elves for help. Very highly recommended.
Inheritance series:
-
Eragon *****
-
Eldest *****
Patterson, James - Skip the first two. They're adult books and are not neccesary to enjoy the
Maximum Ride series. Maximum Ride and her flockmates escape from the School, the genetic research lab that created them. They are 98% human and 2% avian so they have wings and are able to fly. Well, the School just found and abducted the youngest member of the group. With a rescue in mind and a plan to escape to a place where they can be safe, the six outwit their hunters to survive just a bit longer. In the second book, after a stay with an FBI agent and a relatively normal life, Max has to face her destiny... or die before she has a chance. Highly recommended.
